As I promised I’m letting you know that I’ll be watching firs movie soon. And how soon? What would you say for this Sunday evening? I mean evening at my place. As the movie has only about 50 minutes let’s say I’ll start at 9 p.m. CET.
I did some investigation about this movie and I found out that they have a mistake in the 99 classic movie book. They stated it’s from 1922 and it’s sequel. But it’s not sequel and the movie is originally from 1920.
And what movie it is?
It’s called The Cabinet of Dr. Caligari. It’s German silent movie / horror. Official description from IMDb is: “Hypnotist Dr. Caligari uses a somnambulist, Cesare, to commit murders.” That’s it. No more. The movie is directed by Robert Wiene and written by Hans Janowitz and Carl Mayer. But basically the two main characters should represent government (Dr. Caligari) and a killer soldier (Cesare). There is whole Wiki page about this movie so if you’re interested you can check it out. As it’s said on Wiki: “The film reflects a subconscious need in German society for a tyrant, and it is an example of Germany’s obedience to authority and unwillingness to rebel against deranged authority. He says the film is a premonition of the rise of Adolf Hitler and the Nazi Party, and says the addition of the frame story turns an otherwise “revolutionary” film into a “conformist” one.”
And great think is it’s on YouTube. Yes, the whole movie. I found two versions. One in English which is about 50 minutes long and one German which is about 1 hour long. But YouTube offers you automated translation of subtitles so you can watch whatever version you want.
And don’t forget I’ll try to tweet while watching so you are more than welcome to join me 🙂 My Twitter name is @SkyBehindEyes and don’t forget to use #SBEMovie1
